Bloodroot in the evening sun…
Before the forest canopy fills in, the Bloodroot makes an early spring appearance. The plant’s name is taken from the bright, poisonous, red juice that oozes from its rootstock, if cut. If used properly, both Indians and pioneers used the plant’s roots for topical medicinal purposes, such as the treatment of fungus infections.
More fascinating, at least from my textile science background, the red juice harvested from the roots was used as a fabric dyestuff and body paint by the Indians, and later adopted by the settlers of the new world.
